Position Description: Minister of Music
The Minister of Music leads all programs that surround the musical ministry of St John’s Episcopal Church. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as the principal organist for all services, directing the Adult Choir, Youth and Children’s choirs, Instrumental groups, and providing content for the congregation’s worship services as well as coordinating for special music events including a monthly Taize service, several evensongs, and the management of an annual concert series. All efforts of the Director of Music Ministries will support St. John’s vision and ministry.
Principal Responsibilities:
1. Serve as Parish Organist
2. Serve as Parish Choir Director
3. Plan musical settings for services, including Sunday services, Evensongs, weddings and funerals
4. Direct weekly and special music rehearsals
5. Oversee use, and upkeep on Parish musical instruments: Three Manual pipe organ (61-rank Moeller/Hagerstown Organ Company) Rebuilt 2003 and two grand pianos
Supporting Responsibilities:
1. Provide vocal instruction to the choir and work to recruit new members.
2. Lead choir and congregation in music during worship
3. Provide vision, organization, and maintenance of the music library and music room
4. Attend staff meetings and long-range planning meetings as scheduled by the Rector
5. Maintaining technical proficiency through regular practice, and engaging in continuing education
6. Provide opportunity for organ scholars to develop their organ and choral conducting skills
7. Be available to organize, plan, and perform at musical programs for the community in which Saint John's is a participant; offer assistance in presenting classes in church music for the benefit of the parish through Christian Education programs
8. Provide administrative, supervisory, pastoral, and other duties as needed or requested by the Rector. Attend staff meetings and be available to meet with the Rector as needed
9. Plan and manage a music series, which includes but is not limited to: recruiting artists, writing letters of invitation, designing brochures, coordinating publicity, arranging for receptions, and maintaining a current list of sponsors.
10. In keeping with the policies of the Episcopal Church (TEC), all employees and volunteers working with children/youth will complete the Safe Church curriculum and pass a background check. Additional requirements may be needed over time.
11. Provide the Rector with a current copy of the teaching/rehearsal schedule and coordinate the use of the facilities with the parish calendar.
12. Be an active member of the local Cumberland Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and pursue membership, if not already a member, of the Association of Anglican Musicians.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Knowledge of sacred music, particularly Episcopal (Anglican choral tradition), and organ literature
2. A bachelor’s or master’s degree or the equivalent in experience
3. Organ/Choral proficiency
4. Ability to communicate clearly with all ages
5. Strong administrative and organizational skills
Additional Information:
1. Position is 3/4 time (up to 34 hours weekly)
2. Salary and benefits commensurate with Anglican Association of Musicians standards, based on education and experience
