The Fifth Sunday of Easter

May 3, 2026

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Jesus says this to his disciples in the Gospel of John, and it lands the way only a promise made in the middle of uncertainty can land. Thomas pushes back: “We do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” It’s an honest question—the kind that surfaces when the future feels opaque and the path forward unclear.

Jesus’ answer is not a map or a set of instructions. It is himself: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” The way is not a road to be followed but a person to be known. In this Fifth Sunday of Easter, the Church is still caught up in the long joy of resurrection—and this Gospel invites us to trust that joy more deeply. Not as a feeling we summon, but as a reality that holds us even when our hearts are troubled.

We follow someone who knows the Father, who goes to prepare a place, and who promises to return. That’s enough—more than enough—to walk by. Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.
