The Seventh Sunday of Easter

May 17, 2026

The Gospel for this Sunday is a fragment of what scholars call the High Priestly Prayer—Jesus, on the night before his death, looking up to heaven and praying not for himself but for those he is leaving behind. “I am no longer in the world,” he says, “but they are in the world.” He has already begun to cross the threshold, and his prayer is entirely for us.

We find ourselves in a similar in-between this Sunday—suspended between Ascension and Pentecost, in the quiet days of waiting. The disciples have gathered in the upper room. The risen Christ has gone. The Spirit has not yet come. And in that pause, they did what Jesus had asked: they devoted themselves to prayer.

What does it mean to be held in someone else’s prayer? To know that before you were afraid, before you felt the weight of the task ahead, someone had already spoken your name to the Father—and asked that you be one, as he and the Father are one? That is the gift of this Sunday: not a command, but a prayer already offered on our behalf.

Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.
