Minister of Music

Position Summary

Saint John’s Episcopal Church is seeking a Minister of Music to lead its congregational worship, direct choir programs, and manage community music outreach. This role combines keyboard proficiency, choir leadership, and administrative stewardship to nurture a vibrant liturgical tradition.

Key Responsibilities

Worship and Liturgies: Serve as organist for Sunday services (8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.), feast days, Evensongs, weddings, and funerals. Select all service music in collaboration with the Rector.

Choir and Talent Development: Direct parish choirs, train cantors and soloists, and establish a dynamic chorister program for youth.

Program Management: Oversee the Saint John’s Music Series, chair its Steering Committee, manage fundraising, and build local community partnerships.

Administration: Manage music budgets, maintain the music library, oversee instrument care and organ restoration, and hire guest musicians as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s or graduate degree in music (organ, sacred music, or choral conducting), with 5 or more years of church music leadership experience preferred.

Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in organ, piano, and adult and youth choral conducting.

Knowledge and Affiliations: Deep understanding of Episcopal and Anglican liturgy (1979 Book of Common Prayer). Membership, or willingness to join, in the AGO and AAM, adhering to their ethical standards.

Requirements: Clear background check before appointment, and completion of Safe Church training within 30 days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation available upon request.

Four weeks vacation and one week of funded continuing education.

Child Care Provider

Part-Time · Sunday Mornings · Reports to the Rector

Position Summary

Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Hagerstown, Maryland seeks a part-time Child Care Provider. The provider safeguards the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of parish children ages 0–8 while parents attend services and events.

Duties Vary by Week

Weeks 2 and 4 — Children’s Chapel: a teacher leads a lesson and craft for preschool-through-grade-3 children; the provider assists with child care and supports the teacher as needed.

Weeks 1, 3, and 5 — General Child Care: the provider oversees children up to age 8, allowing parents to attend worship. A parish volunteer assists the provider each week.

Duties and Responsibilities

Greet children and parents upon arrival.

Supervise play, read stories, and organize age-appropriate activities for the designated week.

Attend to basic needs such as feeding and diaper changes.

Maintain a child-proof environment; respond quickly to emergencies and contact parents immediately.

Sanitize toys, surfaces, and changing stations before and after use.

Schedule volunteers so that two adults are always present; volunteers must complete the required Episcopal Diocese of Maryland training.

Qualifications

At least 18 years old with experience in childcare, babysitting, or early childhood education.

Pass a background check and complete the church’s mandatory child-protection training (Safe Church) required by the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.

Current infant/child CPR and First Aid certifications.

Ability to sit on the floor, bend, lift, or carry children up to 30 lb.

Work Schedule and Compensation

Typically 4 hours per week on Sunday mornings for the 10:15 a.m. service.

Availability for special services (e.g., Christmas Eve) and other church events as needed and negotiated.

Pay commensurate with experience.

Reports directly to the Rector and collaborates with Christian Formation.
