June 28, 2026
There’s something almost startling about how small Jesus makes the measure of welcome in today’s Gospel. Not a sermon, not a miracle, not even a kind word — just a cup of cold water, offered to someone in need. And yet Jesus says that gesture carries the weight of welcoming him, and welcoming the One who sent him.
We tend to think hospitality has to be grand to count: the right meal, the right words, the right amount of effort. But the measure Jesus gives is almost embarrassingly modest. A cup of water. Attention paid. A door left open.
Saint John’s has always understood this, in its own quiet way — coffee hour conversations, a hand on a shoulder at the Peace, a meal brought to someone who is grieving. None of it looks remarkable from the outside. All of it, Jesus says, is received as if offered to him.
So this week, the invitation is simple: notice the small chances to welcome someone, and trust that they matter more than they seem to. Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.
