All Saints’ Sunday

November 1, 2026 · All Saints’ Day, Year A

Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. — The Collect of the Day

On All Saints’ Sunday we read the names aloud: the friends and neighbors of this parish we have lost in the past year, people who sat in these pews and shared our common life. Hearing those names, many of us will recognize ourselves in the Gospel: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” The Beatitudes are not a checklist for becoming a saint. They are Jesus looking at ordinary, tired, grieving people and telling them the truth about where God is to be found: with the meek and the merciful, with the peacemakers and the pure in heart. Our Collect says that God has “knit together” the faithful in one communion and fellowship, and that is the comfort of this day. The thread that held the people we love still holds them, and it holds us too. When we sing “For all the saints, who from their labors rest,” we are singing with them, not only about them. And as we renew our baptismal vows this morning, we remember that we were knit into that same fellowship at the font. Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.

✚ All Saints’ Choral Evensong, Sunday, November 1, 5:00 p.m.
Join the Parish Choir this Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. for All Saints’ Choral Evensong, followed by a reception. The music includes John Ireland’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F. An offering taken during the closing voluntary supports the ministry of the choir. Read the Evensong bulletin.

✚ St. Nicholas Day Lunch, Sunday, December 6
The Parish Life Commission is hosting a festive lunch of homemade soup and sandwiches after the 10:15 service, with a suggested donation, plus a Christmas Sweets Raffle. Bakers are needed for cookies, candies, and holiday favorites: please contact Betty Markle by November 5 at 240-457-2370 or PL-Chair@stjohnshagerstown.org. Raffle tickets are on sale in Trimble Hall from November 8 through December 6, when the winners will be drawn at the luncheon. All proceeds benefit a ministry helping young women, just as St. Nicholas did centuries ago.
