The Sixth Sunday of Easter

May 10, 2026

The word “orphaned” is not one we expect in the middle of Easter. But Jesus uses it deliberately—speaking to disciples who are beginning to understand that he is going away, and who are frightened by what that means. “I will not leave you orphaned,” he says. “I am coming to you.”

The promise is of the Advocate—the Spirit of truth—who will abide not just among them but in them. This is not a consolation prize for the absence of Jesus. It is a different kind of presence, one the world cannot see or receive, but one that the community of faith comes to know from the inside out.

On this Sixth Sunday of Easter, as we draw near to the great feast of Pentecost, the Church is being prepared to receive exactly this gift. We are not left alone. We are not orphaned. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is the Spirit that holds this congregation together, animates our worship, and sends us into the world in love.

Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.
