June 21, 2026
Jesus tells the disciples not to be afraid, and then, in almost the same breath, describes a world where families fracture and grudges follow faith. It is a strange kind of comfort. The reading does not promise an easy road; it promises something steadier: a God who counts every sparrow, who knows the number of hairs on our heads, who will not let us fall through the cracks of our own fear.
There is comfort in being known that completely, especially when discipleship costs something. Most of us will never face the dramatic ruptures Jesus describes, but we know smaller versions: the awkward conversation, the friendship that cools, the choice to stand for something when it would be easier to stay quiet. Jesus does not pretend these costs are small. He simply insists they are not the last word.
What is the last word, then? That we are valued beyond our fear, held by a God who sees us completely and loves us anyway. That is enough to walk back into the world this week with a little more courage.
Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.
