The Feast of Saint John the Evangelist

September 13, 2026 · Homecoming Sunday

Shed upon your Church, O Lord, the brightness of your light, that we, being illumined by the teaching of your apostle and evangelist John, may so walk in the light of your truth, that at length we may attain to the fullness of eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. — The Collect of the Day

Peter has just heard Jesus say, “Follow me,” and his very first move is to look over his shoulder. “Lord, what about him?” It is such a human question. We compare. We wonder whether someone else’s path is easier, or longer, or more blessed than our own. Jesus answers gently but firmly: “What is that to you? Follow me!” On this Homecoming Sunday, as we keep the feast of our patron, Saint John, that small exchange sounds like an invitation. The beloved disciple did not spend his life measuring himself against Peter. He stayed close, watched carefully, and told the truth about what he had seen and heard. “We declare to you what we have seen and heard,” his letter says, “so that you also may have fellowship with us.” That is what homecoming is: people who have glimpsed God’s goodness passing by, gathered again to share it. So we come back to these pews and to one another, not to compare our stories but to walk together in the light, as today’s Collect prays. Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.

This Sunday’s Music: Ginny Morgan Arey sings Franck’s Panis Angelicus, and trumpet and bagpipe join the organ and choir for the feast; hymns include ‘By all your saints still striving’ and ‘I want to walk as a child of the light.’

✚ Homecoming Sunday: September 13
This Sunday! We keep the Feast of Saint John and kick off a new year of programs, events, and fellowship. After the 8:00 a.m. service, enjoy a festive breakfast in Saint Mary’s Chapel (8:45 a.m.) and docent-led history tours of the church and grounds (9:00 a.m., meet in the church). Children’s Chapel meets during the 10:15 a.m. Festive Holy Eucharist, followed by a festive luncheon reception in Trimble Hall (11:30 a.m.) and cemetery tours with Charlie Chaney (12:30 p.m., meet in Trimble Hall). Come renew old friendships and make new ones!

✚ Our Historic Organ Turns 100
The 2026-2027 church year marks the 100th anniversary of the Annie Amelia Irvine Brugh and Phillip Andrews Brugh Memorial Organ, built by the M. P. Moller Company right here in Hagerstown.

✚ Sunday Adult Forums Return September 20
Father Rick’s Adult Forum meets Sundays at 9:10 a.m. in Saint Mary’s Chapel. This year he will explore biblical conversations, the Episcopal Church, social justice, and more, asking, “What does the Book of Common Prayer say about...?” On September 20 he will lead a discussion on addiction in response to the film Clean Hands, which opens at the Maryland Theatre on Thursday, September 17 (a 2:00 p.m. showing is on the parish calendar). On September 27 the conversation continues with a look at Brooke’s House and its work helping women find hope and sobriety.

✚ Education for Ministry (EfM)
The Christian Formation Commission hopes to restart Education for Ministry. If you would like to join a group, serve as a mentor, or learn more, fill out the short form at tinyurl.com/stj-efm, email parishadmin@stjohnshagerstown.org, or call the parish office at 301-733-2560.

✚ Children’s Chapel Volunteers Needed
Help us keep the promise we make at every baptism: to lead our children in the faith. Volunteers complete the Diocese’s Safe Church Training and assist the Children’s Chapel leader. Children’s Chapel meets twice a month, so with enough helpers you would serve only a couple of times a year. Contact Kip in the parish office or Carol Cox at JuniorWarden@stjohnshagerstown.org for the training information.

✚ Clothing Drive for the City Park Fair Giveaway
For the seventh year, we are collecting new and gently used clothing for the free giveaway at the annual City Park Fair. Please bring donations to church on Sundays; the Outreach Committee will sort them for the Saturday, September 19 giveaway, in partnership with Families Helping Families. ✚ Brooke’s House Morning Devotion
Join Heidi McCusker and our friends from St. Mark’s, Lappans, for morning devotions at Brooke’s House Coffee and Chocolates on Saturday, September 26, at 9:00 a.m. The group meets monthly on the fourth Saturday, breaks for the Christmas season, and resumes in January.

✚ Interfaith Progressive Dinner
Join Father Rick, Saint John’s, and the Hagerstown Area Religious Council for the yearly Progressive Dinner on Saturday, September 26. We begin with appetizers here at Saint John’s at 5:00 p.m., and the evening continues at local Latter-day Saint and Muslim congregations. $25 per person.
