The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday

May 24, 2026

The disciples are behind locked doors. Fear drove them there—fear of the people who had just crucified their Lord. And yet, into that sealed room, Jesus comes and stands among them. The first thing he says is not an explanation or a rebuke. It is simply: “Peace be with you.”

There is something quietly startling about this moment. The risen Christ doesn’t wait for the disciples to get their courage together. He meets them in their hiding place. He shows them the wounds that are still there, real and visible—and the disciples rejoice.

Then he breathes on them. It’s a small gesture, intimate and unhurried, nothing like the rush of wind at Pentecost in Acts. But that breath is the Holy Spirit, and with it comes a commission: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

We too receive that Spirit—in our locked rooms, in the places where fear has made us small, in the quiet of a Sunday morning. And we find that peace is not the absence of wounds but the presence of Christ in the midst of them.

Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.
